In a recent survey we asked out of town customers about their trip to New York: the purpose, whether they stayed overnight, what day they arrived and how long they stayed. The answers provide some insight into one of the most troublesome performances of the week.
- 63% of out of town Telecharge buyers said seeing a show was the primary reason for the trip.
- 81% stayed overnight
- More than 70% stayed more than one or two nights.
- Only 25% arrived between Sunday and Tuesday, another 16% on Wednesday.
- The rest (59%) arrived Thursday, Friday or Saturday
Locals have the pick of the week as to when to go. They can go on a Tuesday when the curtain time is early. They can choose to start their weekend early and go out on a Thursday, maybe also picking an early curtain. Some people prefer weekend matinees as they come in from the suburbs or they want to have dinner after the show and don’t want to be out late. And of course there are some people who prefer Friday or Saturday night. Are people avoiding Wednesdays or do they just have other options for when to go? Is it that the audience is not large enough for all the shows that play Wednesday night?
This seems like a good question to ask in Focus Groups. Who is the Wednesday night audience?
